The system works on the principle of ultrasonic measurement of the pit level surface. The sensor emits ultrasonic pulses in the direction of the mud surface level, and then the pulse is reflected back and received by the sensor. It measures the time t between pulse emission and reception. The instrument uses time t (and the velocity of sound c) to calculate distance D between the sensor membrane and the fluid surface: D = c · t/2
is used for continuous, non-contact pit fluid level measurement on drilling rigs.
The sensor must be vertically aligned directly above the mud surface, and this must not be covered with a thick layer of foam.
