The sensor used is NAMUR (30 mm diameter) type which has to be positioned within 10 mm of the target to be effective in our case the pump piston. It is installed in each of the mud pump available on the rig.
When the metal object is not in front of the detector the circuit will consume more current. Effectively this is a switching apparatus and each current change can therefore be counted, giving a direct count of the pulses.
